Lighthouse

Lighthouse

2008, portuguese marble, 240 x 120 x 100 cm

Pateo São Miguel / Évora, Portugal

The marble sculpture "Lighthouse I" was created during a sculpture symposium organized by the Eugenio Almeida Foundation in the southern Portuguese city of Évora, UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. The special beauty of the site Pateo de São Miguel as well as the immediate proximity to the university church of Espirito Santo in the historical centre of the town challenged me to find a site-specific solution for the sculptural task.

The chosen material was white Portuguese marble, which is mainly found in the historic architecture of Évora next to granite and whitewashed walls. The unique bright light of the so-called "white city" was another aspect of my work. Thus, in this sacred environment, I created a kind of small light-flooded "temple" which appears in certain sun constellation in its inner space mysteriously enlightened thanks to the reflective power of the marble crystals.
